The colors vary from creams and blues to reds, browns and blacks,  according to location. In China there is pale green and pink soapstone; in Russia and Alaska there is black soapstone. Stones from different countries have different properties, but all are chosen according to their quality. Soapstone which is 1 to 2 on the hardness scale, compared with 10 for diamond. Its trick is to combine softness with solidity. Polishes to a smooth finish and scratches leave a white mark which makes it easy to texture. Carving stones are available in freeform shapes and some smaller cut block. When ordering please keep in mind that the stones will not be cut to specific shapes and/or   sizes. Formula to calculate approximate weight of your stone : (Length x Width x Height) / 1728 = Cubic Footage of Stone Cubic Footage x 160 = Stone Weight in Lbs Carving stones are products of nature.  Carving stones are available in freeform shapes only. Stones will not be cut to specific shapes and/or sizes. Weight for most stones will be in the range of 10 Lbs to 100 Lbs up to approx. 125 Lbs. Some stones available in heavier pieces. Please order the approximate weight of stone required. We will confirm availability prior to processing your order. Pricing listed on a per pound basis. We currently have several large bolder and blocks in stock. Some Grey / green or Beige Brazil, nice and solid blocks,  and a nice 20 lb pink chunk from China. Can be carved with hand tools Blue Alabaster The colors of this alabaster range from a light to medium blue hue. The stone is pure and smooth- grained with almost no flaws for great carving. Can be carved with hand tools. This stone holds detail well. White Soapstone   is a pure virgin pristine snow white that is extremely easy to carve a true soapstone. There are striations but these can easily be carved through resulting in a smooth satin finish with perfect results. This soapstone can be carved with a chip knife and sand paper. White Soapstone is quite soft and easy to carve. Black Chlorite Stone This stone has a dark green appearance in rough form which polishes nicely into a dark black color. Can be carved with hand tools. This particular stone is as hard as some alabaster stones.
